Parish: This Crystal Palace star deserves England call-up

Steve Parish has heaped praise on Crystal Palace man Scott Dann.

Speaking to the Croydon Advertiser, Parish has expressed his belief that Dann deserves an England call-up, due to the dearth of quality centre-halves in the Premier League.

The Crystal Palace chairman said: “I haven't seen a better centre-back. I can't believe he's too far away from England given the amount of players we've got at centre-back in the league.

“I hope he does get called up for England. It would be fabulous for Palace and for him because he deserves it.”

Dann is a name that has not been mentioned too frequently in relation to an England call-up, but as a key figure of the Eagles squad, it does come as a surprise to see him miss out.

Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka are guaranteed first-choice centre-backs, but the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones seem to get in the squad only due to their adaptability.

That means that Dann is missing out for being simply a centre-back, but a very good one at that.

Blocks per GameTackles Won per GameTackle AccuracyClearances per GameAerials Won per Game
Scott Dann 1 0.6 76.2% 6.7 3.5
Average Joe 0.2 1.1 76.3% 2.3 1.4

As can be seen from the above Opta Stats table, Dann is far above the Premier League average for defensive actions, with the only thing he lacks in his tackles won per game stat.

However, considering his impressive block and clearance tallies, it should be suggested that Dann is a good enough defender to read the game well, meaning he does not have to commit himself to needless challenges.

He may be an unfancied name, but on current form, Dann certainly deserves a place in the England team.
