Remember the name Bernard Bulbwa – he could be the next Nigerian to follow the likes of Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Nwankwo Kanu with a Premier League move
Fans watching the final of the African Youth Championship in Dakar last weekend were treated to a stunning goal from a potential global star in the making.
While the likes of Nwankwo Kanu and Jay-Jay Okocha previously made their name with a series of impressive displays for the Super Eagles, they never pulled off anything quite as spectacular as Bernard Bulbwa.
An 18-year-old striker with a great future ahead of him, the Nigerian striker was the man of the moment in the final against Senegal’s under-20 team.
His crowning moment came in the first half of the encounter with Bulbwa netting an opening goal of such quality, it genuinely has to be seen to be believed.
In one seemingly fluid motion the young striker flicked the ball over his own head, before unleashing a sensational volley to beat the Senegal goalkeeper with relative ease.
A relative unknown until this goal, the strike has catapulted Bulbwa into the limelight at an early age.
Speaking to Supersport.com, the forward outlined the effort in rather more frank terms.
“I had space around me after outpacing my marker. I saw the posts and I shot and it floated past the rooftop and that was a goal. You don’t get such a goal by luck. It is hard work..." he said.
Nigeria went on to win the game 1-0, despite significant pressure from their Senegalese opposition, however much of the post-match reflection focused on Bulbwa.
And if this goal is a sign of what is to come from the 18-year-old, then we may have a striker on our hands to rival the great Nigerian’s of the Premier League.
Forget the names Kanu, Finidi, Martins or Yakubu – in 2015 it’s all about Bulbwa!
