Sterling vs Nasri, do Manchester City need the Liverpool man?

Raheem Sterling

The Liverpool youngster has been linked with a big-money move to the Etihad Stadium, but do the champions even need him?

According to the Sun, Manchester City are set to spend to big in the summer to bring in Liverpool star Raheem Sterling.

While the title race is far from over, it appears that it will be Chelsea who emerge victorious at the end of season, given their current lead and games in hand.

Having also exited the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona, and both domestic cup competitions, it is looking like being a season of disappointment for City after last season’s success.

That disappointment could lead to a summer spending spree, with Sterling reportedly one of their targets. We decided to compare the youngster with current City midfielder Samir Nasri, who the youngster would likely replace, to see if they actually need the England man.

In terms of goals, Sterling leads in that department with six compared to Nasri’s two, while he also leads the Frenchman in the assists column, although just by one.

In the passing stats, the youngster has made 889 total passes, with 716 of them being accurate, an impressive 80% success rate. Nasri tops that though with 1181 passes this season, 1064 of which have been accurate, giving him an even more impressive success rate of 90%.

Dribbling is also a big part of tboth player’s games, and in this regard the Frenchman comes out on top as well. He has participated in 29 contests so far this season, winning an impressive 27 of them in total, a success rate of 93%. In contrast, Sterling has 155 contests to his name, winning 83 of them, a success rate of just 53%.

It seems then, that there would not be drastic improvement should City decide to replace Nasri with Sterling, especially if they wish to continue to try to emulate Barcelona’s passing style. In goals alone though, the youngster comes out on top, and that could easily sway any decision over a potential summer swoop.
