Is Per Mertesacker the player most likely to leave Arsenal this summer?

Emirates Outside Night

With the summer transfer window drawing ever closer, we take a look at one Arsenal player who may not be there next season following Gabriel's arrival.

When football supporters discuss upcoming transfer windows it is usually with potential new arrivals in mind. But every summer, players leave clubs as others arrive and this one will be no different.

Arsenal have proved to be very effective in the recent windows, signing Alexis Sanchez in the summer and Gabriel Paulista in January, and while they are going to need to bring in quality additions in the close-season, could one player in particular be playing his last few games as a Gunner?

Per Mertesacker has made 161 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, including 38 this season, so why on earth would the 30-year-old move on when he remains a regular starter?

Quite simply, the arrival of Gabriel has shaken things up at the back and the classy Brazilian is already impressing alongside Laurent Koscielny.

The 24-year-old has looked great every time he has played and he has recently consigned Mertesacker to a place on the bench.

When you consider Gabriel’s ability and his developing partnership with Koscielny, they will surely be the first-choice pairing next season, leaving both Mertesacker and his manager Arsene Wenger with a decision to make.

With a contract until the summer of 2017 and with plenty of football left in him, the German may remain in North London and rotate with his fellow centre-backs. But given the presence of Calum Chambers and the possibility of Arsenal further strengthening in that position, Mertesacker may pursue regular first-team football elsewhere.

Gabriel is already outshining him, and considering his experience the older defender is not going to want to be a substitute at best when there are other clubs out there who would gladly put him in their starting line-up.
