Robbie Savage, Phil Neville and co react to Steven Gerrard’s red card against Manchester United

Chelsea Penalty v Liverpool

Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Anfield in the Premier League this afternoon.

Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League this season have taken a huge blow.

Brendan Rodgers’s side headed into the Premier League clash at Anfield against Manchester United this afternoon as favourites, but they lost 2-1.

One of major talking points of the match was the dismissal of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard in the opening minute of the second half.

The former England international midfielder came on as a substitute at half time, but he was sent off just seconds later for a stamp on United star Ander Herrera.

United were 1-0 ahead at that stage, and soon after Gerrard’s sending-off, they doubled their lead, thanks to former Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata’s second goal of the match.

Although Daniel Sturridge halved the deficit in the 69th minute, Liverpool failed to stage a comeback.

After Gerrard’s dismissal, a number of current and former players and well-known footballing figures took to social networking site Twitter to have their say.
