Games between Liverpool and Manchester United usually have plenty of incidents and their latest clash was no different.
United were dominant in the first half and went ahead through Juan Mata – who has looked like his old self in the last two matches.
When Steven Gerrard was sent off less than a minute after coming off the substitutes’ bench it looked like it was not Liverpool’s day; and a wonderful second from Mata only backed up that feeling.
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge had other ideas and he halved the deficit with a finely taken effort that United goalkeeper David de Gea could have done better with. But when United were awarded a penalty with time running out, it looked like Wayne Rooney would add some gloss to the result.
Simon Mignolet’s save was outstanding if ultimately inconsequential but it was telling that the Belgian made the last impact of note when he was dropped for the reverse fixture back in December.
So, United march on and Liverpool are left wondering if their Champions League dreams are over or if there is enough time to claw back a five-point deficit.
