The referee got it all wrong, but the two players are certainly easy to confuse.
Yesterday saw yet another refereeing gaffe in the Premier League.
This time it was Neil Swarbrick who got it all wrong at the Etihad Stadium.
He meant to send off West Brom’s Craig Dawson after he seemingly prevented an obvious goal scoring opportunity.
Unfortunately, he got it all wrong.
The red card was debateable in the first place. What was not debateable is that the ref got the wrong man. He sent off West Brom veteran Gareth McAuley instead.
It is the third recent example of a terrible case of mistaken identity. Wes Brown was sent off for fouling Radamel Falcao when it was actually John O’Shea. On that occasion the referee cowardly said he didn’t get it wrong, at least Swarbrick had the guts to admit his mistake after the game.
Then there was Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Chelsea last season.
But, in fairness to Swabrick, you can see why he got muddled up.
West Brom pair Dawson and McAuley certainly look alike.
Both are a similar height and build and fair headed. In fact, McAuley could easily pass as Dawson’s older brother.
Although, that is what squad numbers are for.
