Manchester United fans react on Twitter to Gerard Pique's El Clasico performance

Forget Cristiano Ronaldo - Manchester United fans were raving about their former defender on Sunday night!

As Real Madrid took on fierce rivals Barcelona during the biggest game in club football, the eyes of Manchester United fans were expected to be on a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Real Madrid lost but the ex-United man duly scored at the Nou Camp, reminding fans in Manchester what he can do and possibly whetting their appetite when it comes to a dream return to Old Trafford - if it is ever going to happen.

But, as events unfolded in Barcelona, Manchester United supporters on Twitter began to focus on a different player (not even a Real Madrid one!).

Jeremy Mathieu opened the scoring for the hosts before Ronaldo's equaliser, while Gareth Bale had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside for the visitors. It was Luis Suarez who eventually settled matters with a second-half winner for Barcelona.

All the while, however, Gerard Pique caught the attentions of Manchester United fans the most. The Barcelona defender was majestic throughout, making superb tackles and holding off the famous 'BBC' combination as best he could.

And, after seeing the 28-year-old in action, United supporters got all nostalgic on social media. They also called for a Pique return to Old Trafford. Could it ever happen?
