Liverpool had a day to forget as they lost 2-1 to Manchester United on Sunday, with captain Steven Gerrard being sent off just 38 seconds after coming off the bench.
United’s goals were both scored by Juan Mata while Daniel Sturridge pulled one back for Liverpool and Simon Mignolet saved a late penalty from Wayne Rooney. But the match was lost by then and some of the Reds’ players were simply outplayed by their opponents.
Certainly in the first half, United dominated proceedings, carrying on after their brilliant showing against Tottenham Hotspur the previous week.
When Gerrard was sent off, United should have taken a stranglehold on the game but Liverpool actually had chances of their own. Yet the damage had been done in the first half, when Joe Allen was one of the players to be shown up by his opponents.
|Passing Accuracy||Tackles Won||Key Passes||Interceptions Won||Dispossessed||Possession Lost||Mins Played|
The Liverpool midfielder failed to win a single interception all afternoon while he lost possession on 14 occasions and was dispossessed a further four times.
The Welsh international also failed to provide a single key pass although he did win two tackles over the 90 minutes.
After the match, we took to Twitter to see what Liverpool fans thought of Allen’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:

Joe Allen plays well against the lesser teams but he is so far out of his depth playing for a team going for the top 4— Adam Mannix (@adammannix23) March 22, 2015
Joe Allen literally lost possession more times than all their players combined I think— harvey prices knob (@Cooteenyo) March 22, 2015

Rogers ultimately responsible for the defeat. Game was lost before half time because he started that buffoon Joe Allen ahead of Gerrard.— David Clarke (@DavidlClarke) March 22, 2015
