Liverpool and Manchester United legends Jamie Carragher and Paul Ince pick combined XI

Manchester United face Liverpool today as two of England’s biggest rivals reignite their long standing feud at Anfield this afternoon.

This week, two football legends have picked their ultimate United-Liverpool combined XI – with a few surprises in store.

Paul Ince, who played for both, and Jamie Carragher picked a combined XI out of United and Liverpool players they played with in their respective careers.

The results, which were reported by Sports Joe, were interesting.

The pair had little trouble agreeing on some of the names.

Peter Schmeichel, Denis Irwin and Ryan Giggs went straight in while Ince needed little convincing over Sami Hyppia’s credentials.

Gary Neville seemed an obvious choice, but the Liverpool legend seemed reluctant to put him in considering they work together for Sky Sports these days. Although his alternative, Markus Babbbel, offered nothing in the way of real competition.

Gary Pallister’s inclusion was also a no-brainer but when they got to the midfield all hell broke loose.

Ince was adamant on Roy Keane and Paul Scholes; Carragher was adamant on Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso for a midfield trio.

In the end Ince subsided (when Scholes’ name fell off the board) and it was Alonso, Keane and Gerrard who got the nod – shocking, Scholes over Keane any day, no?

Up front they went with Luis Suarez, Ryan Giggs and Eric Cantona.

A terrific team which just makes you wonder, how many of the current crop would get in – excluding the already present Gerrard?
