Daniel Sturridge or Wayne Rooney: Who has been better this season?

Liverpool will host Manchester United at Anfield in the Premier League today.

Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney are international teammates, but later today the two England forwards will be adversaries.

That’s because Liverpool take on Manchester United at Anfield in what promises to be a hugely entertaining and fiercely competitive Premier League game.

While Sturridge is likely to start for the Reds, Rooney is set to be deployed in attack by United manager Louis van Gaal.

Both are superb forwards, but who has been better so far this season?

  GoalsGoal AssistChances created/GameTotal Shots/GameShots on Target/GameBig Chance Missed/GameTouches/GamePen Area Entries/GameAppearancesMins Played
Wayne Rooney 11 4 1.56 2.32 0.8 0.04 72.24 3.28 25 2,203
Daniel Sturridge 3 1 0.9 3.6 1.3 0.3 34.3 1.4 10 615

Sturridge has scored just three goals and provided only one assist in the Premier League so far this season, but one needs to remember that he has had injury problems this campaign.

However, the fact that the 25-year-old has been able to make just over one penalty area entry per game should be a concern, especially when one considers that Rooney has made over three penalty area entries per match despite not always playing as a forward.

From the Opta Stats table above, it also seems that the Liverpool forward is more adventurous than Rooney in terms of taking shots.
