54 touches, 7 take-ons: Arsenal star superb in victory

Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck was in impressive form as his side defeated Newcastle United.

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck had a superb game as his side defeated Newcastle United 2-1 in a thoroughly entertaining encounter at St. James’ Park.

The Gunners entered the clash looking to put their Champions League disappointment behind them and cement their place in the Premier League’s top four.

Two first-half goals from Olivier Giroud set Arsene Wenger’s side on their way, but they had to hold off strong home pressure as the Magpies searched for a route back into the match.

Giroud’s performance and two goals affirmed his importance to the side, though arguably the visitors’ most impressive performer on the day was former Manchester United man Danny Welbeck.

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, the England international was heavily involved and proved reliable both in possession and defensively in the face of a late barrage of pressure from the hosts.

Welbeck produced three shots on goal and one key pass, while also providing the assist for the opening goal as his header from Santi Cazorla’s free-kick was eventually turned in at close range by Giroud.

Aside from his assist, Welbeck was much improved in possession than in recent displays – recording 54 touches, seven successful take-ons and going the entire game without being dispossessed.

Under pressure from Newcastle’s second-half resurgence, Welbeck stood firm and put in a solid shift with 13 defensive duel wins and four ball recoveries.

With plenty of games left to play, Wenger will look to rotate his attacking options but Welbeck, owing to yesterday’s, display has done his chances of holding onto a first-team spot no harm at all.

Next up for the Gunners is a tasty home encounter with fellow top-four rivals Liverpool, but with regards to their form, perhaps they can now start looking at catching Manchester City rather than what’s behind them.
