The former Reds defender has praised the goalkeeper for the character he has shown since returning to the side.
The Belgian goalkeeper endured a tough start to the season which saw him come in for criticism from every corner and he was eventually dropped in favour of number two Brad Jones.
However, an injury to Jones saw Mignolet return to the side and he has since established himself at the club, trading criticism of his performances for praise.
Arguably the change of formation from manager Brendan Rodgers, which saw his side swap to three at the back and become more comfortable and solid as a unit, has had a positive impact on Mignolet’s form, but Thompson has praised his character nonetheless.
“At this moment, no,” Thompson responded when asked if Liverpool need a new keeper.
“This boy, for what he has done, and to come through what he has done, he has been absolutely terrific.”
Despite praising the Belgian, Thompson does admit that there are still some questions around the keeper that need to be answered at some point.
One of those areas is his kicking ability, which has remained suspect since he signed from Sunderland in 2013, and Thompson admits that remains a concern. However, he says that Mignolet deserves praise for the character he has shown in re-establishing himself at Anfield.
“People will still be suspect about his kicking, but in his goalkeeping he’s been terrific,” he added.
“Fair play to him, you need character to come through what he’s come through. To be playing as well as he is now, it’s a win-win situation for all.”
