The premise for Pixels is simple, year's ago Nasa sent a probe into space containing elements of humanity. The idea was to teach any beings that may be out there about who we are. The probe contained music, movies, books and computer games. Unfortunately the probe is discovered by aliens who get the wrong end of the stick and decide to attack earth using the very characters from those games.
Sound familiar? If you're a Futurama fan than probably as the episode Anthology of Interest featured a segment where Fry tries to save the earth from Space Invaders, including Donkey Kong among others and aided by Pacman. This particular movie is also an enlarged remake of a short movie from 2010 also called Pixels.
It looks as though Adam Sandler (Grown Ups, Big Daddy, Happy Gilmore) has decided to take this idea further by creating an entire movie based on the concept. He is joined in the cast by Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Death at a Funeral), Josh Gad (21, Love & Other Drugs, Jobs), Michelle Monaghan (Source Code, Gone Baby Gone, Due Date), Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Sharpe), Kevin James (The King of Queens, Here Comes the Boom, Paul Blart Mall Cop) and Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars, 13 Going on 30, Spring Breakers).
Pixels has been Directed by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, The Goonies, Gremlins) and was written by Timothy Dowling (Role Models, This Means War, George Lucas In Love), Tim Herlihy (Saturday Night Live, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer), Patrick Jean (Pixels) and Adam Sandler.
The trailer is highly impressive and gives us a good impression of what to expect. The graphics are fantastic and it looks as though this is going to be really funny as well as a massive nostalgia trip.
