Ex-Arsenal star Paul Merson: Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo has been embarrassing for past three months

Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson is critical of ex-Manchester United and current Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Paul Merson has said on the Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday show that Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been “embarrassing” for the past three months.

The former Arsenal attacker also believes that Barcelona ace Lionel Messi is a better player than the ex-Manchester United star.

“I used to see Messi and Ronaldo heads or tails sometimes,” Merson said on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday show today.

“About a year ago I used to think there is not a lot between them. He is putting Ronaldo to shame now. He is a team player. You watch Ronaldo over the last three months - he has been embarrassing.”

Is Paul Merson’s criticism fair?

Ronaldo has not been at his best over the past few weeks, but to suggest that the 30-year-old has been “embarrassing” is over the top.

Since the start of 2015, the Portugal international has indeed suffered a dip in form, but five goals in his last 10 games is not exactly a sign that he is in decline.

The Portugal international remains one of the two best players in the world and a key element in the current Madrid team.

Having scored 30 goals and created 51 chances in 24 La Liga appearances so far this season, Ronaldo will be up for the challenge to lead Madrid to victory over Sunday’s ‘Clasico’ against Barcelona.
