Given Chelsea’s six-point lead at the top of the Premier League, reigning champions Manchester City simply had to win this weekend, and that they did.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side won 3-0 against West Bromwich Albion, courtesy of goals from Wilfried Bony, Fernando and David Silva.
The Spaniard in particular impressed all game, playing a total of 11 key passes and looking close to his very best. But it was a team effort and City can now watch Chelsea’s match against Hull City on Sunday knowing they have done their bit for another week.
Following the match, two of City’s stars took to Twitter to express their feelings, including goal-scorer Fernando.
The Brazilian doubled City’s advantage shortly before half-time and he was clearly pleased with his effort, writing, “Thank you God for this goal and congrats team on our big win today. Couldn’t be happier.”
Argentine striker Sergio Aguero also had his say, writing, “Eight games left and anything can happen.”
It certainly can, and while Chelsea will hope to stretch their lead again in 24 hours, the simple fact is both sides have some very tough games in the pipeline that could change things in no time.
