There is little doubt that Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani will continue to be linked with a move to the Premier League. talkSPORT have the Uruguayan linked with a transfer to Manchester United, and the Daily Mail say he should be Arsenal bound.
However, in his current form, there is a case that neither team should be looking at spending big on the former Napoli man.
In Ligue 1, the €60 million striker has now gone 544 minutes without a goal. Extending the run further back he has only scored twice in his last 933 minutes, spanning a run of 15 games.
During his second season in France, the 28-year-old has struggled to match the 16 goals he scored last year and it has had an effect on PSG’s form and ability to run away with the Ligue 1 title.
Many cite that the problems come from playing in Laurent Blanc’s 4-3-3 formation, but nothing has changed from the last campaign, except that Cavani looks like a striker void of any confidence.
You can’t blame the striker for not getting in the right areas. His team mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored 16 goals this season and is averaging 3.81 shots per game, that compares to Cavani’s average 2.78 – the chances are there, it’s just Cavani’s ability to finish that has become a serious issue.
There is still a good player there, but if the £35 million figure being reported is true, it is a huge risk to bring in a striker that has lost his way…just look at Radamel Falcao.
