When Salomon Kalou was consistently scoring goals for Lille in France’s Ligue 1, he was constantly linked with moves back to the Premier League. Arsenal, West Ham and West Brom were reported destinations for the Ivory Coast international, per talkSPORT, but in the end the former Chelsea man picked Hertha Berlin in Germany as his next club.
However, it looks as if the forward may have made the wrong decision as the player and his new club continue to struggle for goals this season.
In two seasons in France, the mercurial striker scored 34 goals in 79 games, but the level of his performance was always under scrutiny. He may have ended the season with a respectable number of goals, but his overall play throughout the season would fail to hit the heights the fans expected.
He may have had a decent return for Lille, but he only managed three in the first 18 games of his final season, and it looks like his struggles have followed him to Germany.
On Friday night, Hertha Berlin picked up a much needed away win, beating Hamburg 1-0 through a goal from defender Sebastian Langkamp. The three points moved the capital club up to 13th, six points clear of the relegation zone and four points ahead of their opponents.
However, another goalless game for Kalou takes his run to 267 minutes without a goal in the Bundesliga and only one in 553 minutes of competitive football.
If Hertha Berlin are to keep themselves out of the drop zone, they will need their second top goal scorer to rediscover his early season form, or they could be sucked back towards the danger-zone.
