Vinnie Jones

We take a look at five famous footballers to have starred in films.

The worlds of football and film are so closely linked, with movies on the beautiful game both praised and ridiculed.

Trying to capture the art of the game in a film is no mean feat, and so famous players generally look elsewhere when trying their hand at acting. Why star in a film about your job if you can be a gangster, a French ambassador, or even a mutant?

The realm of cinema allows footballers to live their wildest fantasies, except one star, who decided to take an imaginative role as a central defender.

So, here are the top five footballers to star in films.

Bobby Moore - Escape to Victory

The only footballer to star as a footballer, West Ham and England legend Moore took a role in Escape to Victory as one of the prisoners in Michael Caine’s team. Playing in defence alongside Caine, Moore was vital in leading the Allied prisoner of war camp to an unlikely draw against the favoured Nazi’s, and then to an escape. Moore starred alongside a host of other legendary footballers, including Pele, Ossie Ardiles and, surprisingly, John Wark.

Stan Collymore - Basic Instinct 2

The former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker shared a scene with Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct 2, which was critically panned upon its release. A film renowned for its steamy content, Collymore didn’t miss out on the action with Stone, and his cameo appearance will likely go down with infamy - much like Collymore’s career.

Fitz Hall - The Fifth Element

The veteran defender was most recently playing for Championship side Watford, and his inclusion on this list is rather strange. Rather than using his fame to work his way into cinema, a 15-year-old Hall made an appearance in the opening stages of 1997 sci-fi epic The Fifth Element. Considering the success of his football career, maybe he was wise to leave cinema after his first role.

Eric Cantona - Elizabeth

The only Oscar winner on our list, Leeds and Manchester United hero Eric Cantona is now a fully-fledged actor, with his biggest role in Oscar winning film Elizabeth, in which he was a French ambassador. Other roles include Looking for Eric, The Second Wind and Jack Says, while he also has two films lined up for the next two years.

Vinnie Jones - Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, X-Men: The Last Stand

Where would any list of film-star footballers be without Vinnie Jones, legend of Leeds and Wimbledon, and renowned hard-man. Fulfilling that image in Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Jones took a complete left-turn when deciding to appear in hysterically bad X-Men: The Last Stand. Appearing as Juggernaut, Jones did his best mutant impression, and smashed a lot of things out of his way.

So, kind of like his football career then.
