Delph is a vital player for Aston Villa and Sherwood has suggested that he has the qualities needed to ensure the club stays in the Premier League and then consolidates to prevent a repeat of another difficult season.
“He has everything I need in a player - his application and desire to play for this football club,” said Sherwood.
“He obviously doesn't want to be in this position again - and we intend not to be in this again although we have a lot of work to do.”
Delph can be the man during games who embodies the messages and ideologies that Sherwood has been trying to create at the club.
He may not be the side’s official captain, but he can lead by example and demand the very best from his teammates as the side battles to avoid relegation.
Villa are on a decent little run of form with three wins in a row under Sherwood and confidence will be high after the big win against Sunderland last weekend.
He can be the man who will snap at the heels of Swansea City’s creative players this weekend to ensure the side doesn’t suffer a great deal of early pressure.
The Swans like to keep the ball down and work away at the opposition, but Delph can set the standard and hopefully give Villa an edge which will lead to another three points.
