Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel hails David De Gea's mentality

The Danish legend has hailed the ability of De Gea to bounce back from his bad start in England.

There is no doubt that Manchester United’s best player in the past two or three seasons has been their goalkeeper David De Gea.

The Spaniard has grown into one of the greatest goalkeepers in the world in recent years. One former Manchester United stopper has now had his say on De Gea.

Peter Schmeichel, who played 393 games for the club in his illustrious United career, won numerous honours at Old Trafford and has been speaking to Sky Sports about the current United custodian.

He has commended the stopper for his recovery from a difficult start at the club and hailed his mentality:

"Every day he would have been reading somewhere that he was not a very good goalkeeper and he was a big mistake. Yet, by the beginning of February, end of March, no one was talking about how bad he was. He was saving points and actually kept Manchester United in the chase for the title.

"To bounce back from the treatment he got from the whole of England for six months it’s unbelievable.

"We talk about goalkeeping, about mentality, and this kid has got it in abundance. He is unbelievable."

De Gea’s form has been superb but unfortunately not unnoticed.

The Spanish stopper is reportedly in the crosshairs of Real Madrid. It is reported by The Mirror that contract talks are at a stand-still in Manchester. With Iker Casillas coming to the end of his career at the Bernabeu Real must start looking for a new long-term goalkeeper.

De Gea, formerly of Real’s rivals Atletico Madrid, would be the perfect option.

However United fans will hope he goes on to emulate the Great Dane’s longevity for the club.
