John Carver hints at identity of next Newcastle captain

Fabricio Coloccini is current Newcastle United captain, but John Carver has hinted at who could take over from him.

Coloccini is set to miss the next three games for the Magpies, having been sent off in the loss to Everton, and Carver has told the Chronicle who will be captaining the side in his absence.

He said: “It will probably be Moussa [Sissoko] because he was captain when Colo was missing in the past.”

Whilst that is no surprise, with Sissoko captaining the Toon before, Carver hinted in the same article as to who could be named long-term skipper at St James’ Park if Coloccini were to leave the club.

The Argentine centre-back has a contract that runs until the end of the 2015/16 season, but Carver could be looking to replace him as captain before that time. Having missed a host of games through injury this season, Coloccini is not the same reliable figure as he has been in the past, and his sending off against Everton was plain idiocy.

When looking to name a club captain, one needs to consider that the chosen player will have to be consistent in both appearances and ability, and has respect of the other players in the squad. Coloccini may fulfil the latter trait, but he cannot fulfil the first two and his time is surely up at the end of this campaign.

There are few captain figures in the Magpies squad to choose from as a potential replacement, but Carver has hinted at a future skipper by praising goalkeeper Tim Krul for his leadership qualities.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Carver said: “Since I took over this situation he [Krul] has been one of the leaders.

“He’s been one of the big characters. He is certainly one who drives the team. He’s got an opinion too, which is great and he speaks up for himself.”
