Fans were not positive about the Liverpool forward's call-up, with some citing his recent injury problems.
Sturridge picked up a thigh injury the last time he was on international duty which was the start of an injury nightmare for the forward having picked up further injuries to his thigh and calf, and kept him sidelined for five months.
Since his return from injury, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been trying to ease the forward back into action with some of the opinion that he is yet to find the form which led to him scoring a total of 24 goals for Liverpool last season.
He has shown flashes of that form though - scoring on his comeback game against West Ham United, and has found the net on two other occasions since.
Liverpool fans are understandably concerned about the welfare of their main forward given what happened the last time he went to play for his country, while fans of other clubs are scratching their heads wondering why he has got the nod ahead of other forwards - notably QPR's Charlie Austin and Burnley's Danny Ings.
Here is what a few fans had to say on twitter:
Sturridge has done nothing to warrant a place in the England squad. Might be some resolve left that Roy wants tested.— Kristian vS Hæhre (@vonstrenginho) March 19, 2015
Wouldn't surprise me if he played Sturridge and Sterling for 180 minutes and forced them to do double training each day #HodgsonOut— Matt (@_MattTaylor__) March 19, 2015
Not sure why Sturridge needs to play against Lithuania or in a friendly. Not fully fit yet obviously and in poor form. That's Roy though.— David Martinez (@DMARTINEZ_85) March 19, 2015
Oh, and how is Sturridge back in the England team after just returning from a 5 month injury layoff....— Craig Hendricks (@CHendricks20) March 19, 2015
How Sturridge got into the England squad but Danny Ings and Charlie Austin didn't, I have no clue!!— MARK STAINTON (@MarkStaintonUK) March 19, 2015
