This has not been the best week for Paris Saint-Germain defender Lucas Digne. However, his bad fortune could be a huge gain for Liverpool this summer. Back in 2013, when the left-back was set to leave Lille for a bumper deal, the Anfield club were linked with a move by the Mirror before he rejected them and Monaco for the big money move to Paris.
Thursday was not a good day for the left-back. Almost simultaneously, Digne was left out of Didier Deschamps’ France squad and his teammate Maxwell signed a new deal until the end of 2016
With his playing time at PSG limited this season, Digne has a huge decision to make this summer. Does he continue to play second fiddle to the veteran Brazilian, or does he look for a move in order to find regular first-team football.
On the day Lucas Digne is left out of Didier Deschamps' France squad, Maxwell extends his stay at PSG. Big summer decision ahead for Digne.— Jonathan Johnson (@Jon_LeGossip) March 19, 2015
PSG bought Digne for what, €15m? Maxwell is 34. And a canny, canny operator.— PhilippaB (@Philby1976) March 11, 2015
The 2016 European Championships are only just over a year away and if he has slipped out of Deschamps thoughts now, action is needed. It’s not just competition from Patrice Evra and Benoit Tremoulinas that he has to worry about, but he is also up against Monaco’s Layvin Kurzawa. There is no way he is going to force his way back in from the bench. Digne is still an excellent defender. He is a very modern-day full-back with the ability to play at both ends of the field. It’s not that his ability has dropped at PSG, just more that Maxwell has been playing so well despite being 33 years old.
From his time at Lille, Digne has experience in a title-winning side and in the Champions League. It wasn’t until he moved to Paris that he won a place in Deschamps squad, but his performances for Lille and the France under-21 squad meant it should have happened sooner.
A move to Liverpool this summer would make perfect sense for the English club plus it would be a wonderful chance for the 21-year-old defender.
