Nathaniel Chalobah has told Get Reading what the secret is behind his ability to play in every position, with the Chelsea academy taking much of the credit.
Primarily a holding midfielder, Chalobah has also played all along the back-line during various loan spells, as well as in a more advanced midfield role. However, it is the deep-lying position that the youngster is most well known for, and it is in this role that he impressed so much whilst on loan with Championship club Watford in the 2012-13 season.
Seen as a potential future Chelsea captain, Chalobah’s development has somewhat stalled in the last two years after some unsuccessful loan spells away from Stamford Bridge. His current stay with Reading is starting to bring back a lot of his promise, and his ability to play in many positions is one of the reasons for that.
Rather than being pushed out of the squad when not needed, the England youth international has been played at left-back and the centre of defence occasionally, and this has helped his development.
It is strange to see a young player with such a strong ability in various positions, considering the lack of match action he has received, but Chalobah has revealed the secret behind Chelsea’s development plan for him.
Speaking to Get Reading, the highly-rated prospect said: “When I was younger after I had my growth spurt at Chelsea, they try and get you playing everywhere. The philosophy at the club is if you’re good enough to play anywhere then either way it’s a benefit for you.
“At the academy they’ve taught us to try and master every single position.”
It is this versatility, and willingness to play in many positions, that could finally open the door for Chalobah to get into the Chelsea first-team, after many years of trying.
