Manchester City’s Willy Caballero was among those left stunned by Joe Hart’s goalkeeping display in Wednesday night’s 1-0 Champions League defeat to Barcelona, with the Argentine moved to take to Twitter to hail his positional rival’s performance.
Hart had an outstanding 90 minutes in the second-leg of the club’s last-16 tie at the Nou Camp, making a competition-leading 10 saves to keep the score respectable, as even the man battling for his starting spot couldn’t hide his admiration.
Gran actuation de Joe que esta en un nivel espectacular. Great match from Joe Hart He is in a brilliant moment. Keep going boy.— Willy Caballero (@willy_caballero) March 18, 2015
Signed from Malaga in the summer for around £6 million, Caballero himself has had Champions League success in the past, having helped the Spanish side to the quarter-final stages during the 2012-13 season, with his form earning him a reputation as one of La Liga’s top keepers.
Having worked under Manuel Pellegrini at La Rosaleda, there were suggestions that he could take the number one job from Hart upon arriving at the Etihad, after the England international endured a testing 2013-14 campaign, but the former Boca Juniors product has instead been restricted to just two league and five cup appearances.
One imagines he can’t be best pleased about being confined to the bench but it at least looks like the pair have a good relationship – something which doesn’t always prove the case in these kinds of circumstances.
