The former Liverpool defender is expecting the Premier League champions to lose at the Nou Camp.
Manuel Pellegrini’s team take on the La Liga leaders at the Nou Camp on Wednesday attempting to overcome a 2-1 first leg defeat – meaning they need at least two goals in order to qualify.
Despite almost impossible odds, they remain in the tie after Lionel Messi missed a late penalty at the Etihad that would have likely put qualification beyond their reach. Thompson, though, says he doesn’t give them ‘much of a chance’ in the second leg.
“I don’t give City much of a chance, if I’m honest,” said Thompson.
“They’re going from defeat at Turf Moor to defeat at the Nou Camp, in my opinion. Even if they score first, I can’t see them turning the tie around.”
The former footballer turned pundit is backing Luis Enrique’s side to overcome City because of their ability on the attack, with a forward trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez in fine form.
On the other hand, City are in a poor run of form at present having lost to Burnley in the Premier League last weekend, with a number of key players struggling as well. Those performances have led to manager Pellegrini falling under increased pressure, with the Chilean tipped to face the sack in the summer.
It is those differences between the two clubs that has Thompson backing Barca for a 3-1 win.
“I think they’ll have far too much for City, who look so flat at the moment,” he added.
“Barcelona can crank it up if they have to and if they concede on the night they won’t panic, so I’m going with 3-1 to Barcelona on the night.”
