Diego 'El Cholo' Simeone is ready to sign a new contract with Atlético Madrid, according to his representative.
Any plans that Manchester City had to lure Diego Simeone to the Premier League this summer are effectively now dead in the water. The much coveted Argentine coach was reported to be a favoured choice among the hierarchy at the Etihad to replace under-fire boss Manuel Pellegrini, while there's also been speculation in the Daily Star suggesting that the Blues might try to lure Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola to England, although that option is also one that will be incredibly difficult to realise.
The news that Simeone will pen a new deal with Atlético Madrid comes directly from his sister and agent, Natalia Simeone, in comments to Spanish broadcaster RTVE after the penalty shoot-out win that fired the team into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
She assured: "We're going to have good news in the next few days about the contract renewal for Simeone. People at the Calderón have been happy with him and very soon, they'll be even happier."
Speaking for himself after the game on Tuesday night, when pressed about if or when he'll sign a new deal, El Cholo simply suggested - per Sky Sports: "There's nothing closed yet and we're waiting to make an official comment."
Atlético Madrid are expected to make said official announcement this week via club president Enrique Cerezo, who has been working extremely hard to ensure Simeone remains convinced that grass elsewhere won't be any greener than at the Vicente Calderón stadium, where he's worshipped by the fans.
Despite all of the speculation surrounding Simeone, widely regarded as one of the best and most sought-after managers in Europe right now, there genuinely seemed to be little doubt that he would remain with the club he loves the most.
