Newcastle United are interested in signing Sidney Sam from Schalke, according to German newspaper Bild via Sport Witness.
Sam has not featured particularly regularly for Schalke this season and Newcastle reportedly feel that he could be a good addition to their squad at the end of the season.
The German international only joined Schalke last summer, but he has failed to make an impression at the club and has not played since February.
It means that the Bundesliga side could be keen to cash in on the midfielder if an opportunity comes about and Newcastle seem to believe that there is potential to pick him up at a cut price.
Would he be a good buy for Newcastle?
If the Magpies could help Sam back to somewhere close to his best form then he would be a superb addition to the side.
Just two seasons ago, Sam was one of the Bundesliga's standout talents and although his time at Schalke hasn't gone to plan, there can be no doubting his quality.
He would bring pace and goals to the Newcastle midfield and it would surely be a signing which would at least show some intent.
The Magpies have been criticised for failing to sign the quality required to push them on to the next level in recent transfer windows, but Sam would be one of their more high-profile additions and could be one of the bargain buys of the summer.
