Middlesbrough maintained their challenge for a top-two finish in the Championship this season with a 1-0 victory over Derby County away from home on Tuesday.

Aitor Karanka’s side headed into the clash at the iPro Stadium on the back of a 4-1 win against fellow promotion-hopefuls Ipswich Town at the Riverside Stadium.

Winning against Derby was going to be tough and it proved to be so, but in the end Boro picks up the three points.

Chelsea-owned forward Patrick Bamford’s goal in the 64th minute proved to be the difference between the two sides at the iPro Stadium.

It was the 21-year-old’s 14th goal in the Championship this campaign and enhanced Middlesbrough’s chances of gaining automatic promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season.

Middlesbrough had 41% of the possession, seven shots of which three were on target, and four corners.

In contrast, Derby had 59% of the possession, 10 shots of which two were on target, and two corners.

Following the match, Middlesbrough stars Bamford, Lee Tomlin and Dimitrios Konstantopoulos took to social networking site Twitter to revel in the triumph.
