How Middlesbrough's Twitter-based supporters reacted to the veteran defender's performance in the 1-0 win.
Middlesbrough sealed a crucial 1-0 win at promotion rivals Derby County on Tuesday night to move into the Championship’s top-two, as Jonathan Woodgate put in another impressive performance in the heart of defence to help earn the clean sheet.
Patrick Bamford, who spent the second half of last season on loan at the iPro Stadium, netted for the third time in two games in the 64th-minute, rounding goalkeeper Lee Grant to slide home and seal Boro’s fourth victory in six matches.
With 16 goals across all competitions this term, the on-loan Chelsea forward will understandably take most of the plaudits but credit also has to go to Woodgate who, in just his third league appearance of the season, proved that he still has something to offer the team at 35.
The former Leeds United man won a match-high six headers over the course of the 90 minutes, while also recording five clearances and two interceptions to ensure his hometown club remain on course for automatic promotion with eight matches left.
While Watford are top of the table with 72 points, Aitor Karanka’s side are edged out only on goal difference and go into Saturday’s match at third-place Bournemouth hoping to widen the gap between them and the Cherries to five points.
It remains to be seen whether Woodgate will make his third consecutive start but, judging from the Twitter reaction to his latest showing, fans certainly wouldn’t mind him being in the line-up.
