In Pictures: Arsenal just fall short in Champions League again despite valiant effort

Arsenal fell short in their quest to overturn a first leg deficit in the Champions League in Monaco.

Last night was a familiar story for Arsenal in the Champions League as they went out at the last-16 stage of the competition.

After suffering a hammer blow defeat in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium, Arsene Wenger's side had it all to do in Monaco as they tried to overturn a 3-1 lead.

It was a good performance for them and Olivier Giroud's first half strike gave them hope before Alexis Sanchez was booked for simulation when he took a tumble in the penalty area, though replays have shown that to be harsh.

The second half was just all Arsenal, and Monaco were certainly on the ropes as they just simply couldn't keep hold of the ball. The Gunners had their chances as Mesut Ozil fired wide before Theo Walcott hit the post, but Aaron Ramsey's strike gave Arsenal a degree of hope with just over 10 minutes to go.

There were more opportunities and scrambles but Arsenal just couldn't force the issue after a valiant effort, but it's the same old story having previously come so close to overturning first leg deficits against the likes of AC Milan and Bayern Munich in the recent past.
