The Toon are currently in 11th place in the Premier League, but Jonas Gutierrez has insisted to the Chronicle that they must improve that position by the end of the campaign.
35 points from 29 games should be enough to save them from relegation to the Championship, regardless of their current poor form, although moving up the table seems unlikely.
With nine games left, including tough fixtures against Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham, the Toon look set to endure a torrid close to the campaign.
Going on head coach John Carver’s current record, they would do well to win even three of their remaining fixtures, and the bottom of the table could appear quickly if they do not improve.
After flirting with the European places earlier in the campaign, the Tyneside club are slowly moving downwards, and Gutierrez has admitted that Newcastle ‘must’ finish in the top 10 for their season to be respectable.
“We have to finish in the top 10,” the Argentine winger told the Chronicle. “We don’t have any excuses. We have hard games up to the finish of the season, but we have to take points and finish in the top 10.”
