Former Nottingham Forest defender Colin Cooper has suggested reasons Derby County can still get promoted.
Derby’s negative run of form rolls on after they were beaten by Middlesbrough in the Championship last night, which leaves them fifth.
However, Cooper has suggested that the Rams have every reason to be optimistic for the rest of the season.
“I like Derby as a side, I like the football they play, I like the players, Steve’s (McClaren) always been an advocate of playing good football and trying to get young players into the team,” he said.
“Tom Ince came and he that real impact when he came in – They’ve got some very good players and some very good young players.”
Derby would prefer to avoid the play-off places because of the heartache they suffered in the final last season, but they have a good squad of players and an experienced manager if they are confined to a position below the top two.
What will hurt fans the most is that the Rams had a real opportunity to progress and build a lead when they were two points ahead at the top of the table just a few weeks ago.
McClaren has to find a way to get the best out of the squad, to put a positive result on the board and to build some confidence heading into the important closing weeks of the campaign.
Having a talented squad is definitely a positive, but the Rams need to find a way of getting results and securing points, regardless of how they arrive.
