In February Southampton were linked with his signature by the Daily Mail, suggesting The Saints were leading the chase for the talent.
But they also reported Swansea and Everton as keen. The Swansea story was also reported by the South Wales Evening Post. There was no doubt that Defrel had caught the eye.
Now his agent has been discussing his future. In quotes from Tutto Mercato Web, his agent Giampiero Pocetta has spoken about his future.
He certainly suggests he should be on the way soon, but warned that Fiorentina are already on the path:
"Could have left in January, but the company kept him and the boy declined to leave. It was the right choice.
"Next summer will resolve ownership: we shall see what will become of Parma, but it is likely that the Cesena will redeem the entire [registration] card. Then we will evaluate, there is the possibility that Defrel leave Cesena.
"Fiorentina? I do not deny that offers came in the winter and it could reach other in the summer. If Montella praised him can only please us. But now my head is only to Cesena. Defrel wants to help the team escape [relegation], then think about his future."
One issue is his co-ownership with Parma. But with the Italian club on the brink of extinction, Cesena should have little trouble earning 100% of his rights in the summer, as Pocetta hypothesised.
Southampton and Swansea have both had good seasons in the Premier League and will be looking to build upon that next term.
Defrel has scored six goals this season including strikes against Italian giants such as Inter Milan and Lazio. His pace and power, as well as dribbling ability, make him a perfect player for the Premier League and hopefully one of Southampton or Swansea can beat Fiorentina to his signature in the summer.
