Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn told talkSPORT this morning that he feels his old club have to start showing some signs of progression.
Arsene Wenger signed a new three year contract with the club last summer and Winterburn feels he’s got the remainder of his deal to win the title.
Whether that would be enough to see Wenger earn himself an extension remains to be seen but it’s the trophy that Arsenal’s staff, players and fans continuously covet.
“This summer Arsenal have to look ahead and see where the progression is going to come from,” he said.
“I do feel, within the next two years, Arsenal have to challenge for the Premier League title.”
As has been the case with so many recent seasons, Arsenal are just starting to put themselves into a good position over the rest of the campaign.
They are comfortable in third and have a great chance of finishing second this season, but whether they can claw back Chelsea at the top of the table is doubtful.
As things stand, Arsenal are seven points behind Jose Mourinho’s team, which is a difficult but not impossible gap to make back.
Manchester City won their first Premier League title when they overturned an eight point gap to Manchester United, with only six matches left to run in the season.
If Arsenal don’t win the league this season, Wenger must tool up and go stronger next season than he has done in recent years.
If he wants to remain at the top of the club and in control of his own destiny, he needs to make Arsenal the dominant force in English football to prove his critics and doubters wrong all over again.
