Tottenham’s hopes of finishing in the top four this season took a major blow at the weekend, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side conceding ground in the race for the top four by losing 3-0 to Manchester United.
Although the whole team looked jaded and have come in for criticism from the travelling support, central defensive pairing Jan Vertonghen and Eric Dier did not cover themselves in glory.
Wayne Rooney ran the duo ragged and scored an excellent individual goal to put the game’s outcome beyond doubt.
However, Dier was certainly culpable in United’s third goal and should have taken the ball off the England striker in the build-up.
Worryingly, when examining the statistics at whoscored.com, neither Dier nor Vertonghen made a successful tackle throughout the tortuous 90 minutes at Old Trafford.
This will surely be a cause of real concern for Pochettino, who has preferred the pair at the heart of the Spurs defence in recent weeks.
However, with Federico Fazio also an option to be included in the White Hart Lane rearguard, the Argentine boss will surely be considering his selection at centre-half for the rest of the campaign.
It also highlights that although Spurs have a number of issues that they need to resolve if they are to consistently finish in the top four, finding a partnership at the centre of their defence is a real priority.
