The Daily Record is among the sources to have carried reports of a rumour, which could see current Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard end up playing for Celtic on loan.
The Reds legend leaves Anfield at the end of the season for LA Galaxy and has been tipped to link up with the Bhoys on loan, as many players do from major clubs in the MLS.
There is obvious merit and appeal in Celtic signing Gerrard because of his proven quality and experience. However, there are three players in Ronny Deila’s current squad who suggest why the club might not make a move for Gerrard.
Nir Bitton has been in transformed form since Deila took control of the club and he’s already doing the similar role that Gerrard plays when he sits deeper in the middle of Liverpool’s team.
He’s doing a very good job across all competitions for the Bhoys and Deila could be wary of upsetting his momentum and upsetting him generally.
Stefan Johansen is another player who suggests that Celtic don’t need Gerrard and someone who has the ability to play that role further forward, just in behind the main striker.
Johansen has been superb roaming those spaces in between the opposition’s midfield and defence, looking for some space and an opportunity to put Celtic’s opponents to the sword.
Finally there is Scott Brown, Celtic’s leader. Regardless of Brown’s recent antics before the League Cup final, he ticks all of the boxes in terms of what Deila looks for in a leader.
He leads by example, he’s consistent and he has all of that experience, which is important for any team looking to win multiple pieces of silverware.
Celtic already have three top quality players, who cover the benefits that Gerrard provides and if they are going to sign him, he’ll have to accept that he’s back up to this trio, who continue to impress.
