Manchester United round-up: Young right-back gets call-up; duo explain target

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Manchester United duo Michael Carrick and Chris Smalling are targeting a second-place finish in the Premier League this season, with the pair both speaking to the club’s official website following the 3-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

“Yeah, we have got to aim for that,” Carrick said of potentially finishing the season second in the pile. Although he explained that the focus had to be on the weekend encounter with Liverpool and nothing else at this time.

Smalling has similar feelings, adding, “Fourth is the minimum but when it’s there, second is a realistic target and if we keep on performing like we did against Tottenham then I don’t see why we can’t give it a good push.”

United take on Liverpool this Sunday, in a huge match at Anfield before the international break sees domestic football take a backseat.

Louis van Gaal’s side then return to action against Aston Villa in early April.

In other news, the BBC reports that young United defender Donald Love has his former teammate Darren Fletcher to thank for his recent Scotland under-21 call-up.

The 20-year-old is yet to experience senior action for United but he was recommended by Fletcher, with Scotland’s under-21 coach Danny Lennon saying, “You don’t play for a big club like Manchester United unless you have ability, so we are delighted to have Donald along."

Love is predominantly a right-back although he can also play as a centre-back if required.
