Gray feels it’s a vital time for the current boss to be planning and preparing for next season to ensure Leeds are one of the sides in the hunt for promotion into the Premier League.
“Neil Redfearn has got to start getting organised and be thinking: ‘Right, who are we going to bring in to make us contenders next year?’” he wrote.
“We don’t want to be languishing next year, especially with the money Premier League teams will get now if they are relegated thanks to the TV deals.”
The injection of cash that TV deal would provide would certainly be useful to the team if invested and utilised in the right way.
Redfearn has shown superb skill in getting the best out of a very young squad, with his hands tied by the players he can sign because of the transfer embargo Leeds are currently under.
It will be interesting to see the sort of signings he makes over the course of the summer, but if he gets his business done early, those players will have plenty of time to bed in before the new campaign.
Where he feels Leeds need new players won’t become obvious until the club can make signings at the end of the season, but there is arguably a need for wide players and cover through central midfield.
There’s no reason Leeds can’t hit the ground running next season and if Redfearn’s planning has already started as Gray suggests, the club should avoid a repeat of the struggles they endured over the first half of the current season.
