Arsenal's Renny Smith says he has already played nine positions this season

One of Arsenal's young prospects has been speaking about his campaign to date.

Arsenal youngster Renny Smith has been speaking to the club’s official website about his hopes for the remainder of the campaign and his versatility.

The 18-year-old is most commonly known as a central midfielder and he is currently turning out for the Gunners’ under-21 side, for whom he has made four appearances to date this season.

Speaking after his side’s 0-0 draw with Blackburn Rovers, the Austria under-19 international said, “I just want to have as many games as possible. I want to keep trying to be the best player on the pitch week in, week out.”

It is a bold statement but also an admirable one, with Smith clearly having confidence in his ability but well aware of the challenges ahead.

It takes quite a talent to break into Arsenal’s first-team and Smith has a long way to go, but his ability to play in a range of different positions should help.

“I’ve played nine different positions this season,” the Arsenal youngster said, “so that’s all of them other than up front or in goal. Maybe I’ll play as a striker soon!”

Arsenal have a number of promising young players coming through the ranks but in Smith, they have one who clearly recognises the need to impress every time he walks on to the pitch, and one who will play anywhere and everywhere he is asked to.

As a result, manager Arsene Wenger may well be taking note.
