Why the stats suggest Poyet and Sunderland are in deep trouble

Gus Poyet Press Conference Still

Sunderland were plunged deeper into the relegation mire after a 4-0 home defeat to fellow strugglers Aston Villa.

Aston Villa’s first half onslaught at the Stadium of Light on Saturday saw Sunderland drop into 17th place in the Premier League, just one point clear of the relegation zone.

The result means Gus Poyet's job is under severe pressure, with the Black Cats without a league win in six games and with only one victory since the turn of the year.

Braces from Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor secured a crucial win for Villa, who are now climbing the table after the arrival of Tim Sherwood as the club’s manager.

Whilst the Villans acted quickly when they were in danger of losing their Premier League place, Sunderland have chosen the alternative route of standing by Poyet.

However, the stats show this decision could prove costly come May when all is said and done, despite the miracle survival job the Uruguayan pulled off at the end of last season.

  • No side has won fewer games than Sunderland (four) in the Premier League this season
  • Sunderland (14) have drawn at least four more games than any other side in the league this season
  • Saturday was the 14th time that Sunderland have failed to score in the league this season
  • Harry Kane (11) has scored more goals than Sunderland (7) in 2015.
