Spurs fans defend Danny Rose, point blame for Manchester United defeat elsewhere

Danny Rose Tottenham warmup

Many Tottenham Hotspur supporters in the HITC Sport comments section felt the full-back was their best player at Old Trafford.

It was easy to blame every single Tottenham player possible after their 3-0 loss at Manchester United.

A disjointed performance saw the north London side three goals down by half-time - and there was no sign of any sort of resistance even after the break.

But, in the wake of the heavy defeat, several Spurs fans have leapt to the defence of a certain Danny Rose.

Indeed, in response to HITC Sport's player ratings, as well as the reactions of Alan Sugar and Gary Lineker to the Manchester United loss, a number of readers saw left-back Rose as Tottenham's best player on the forgettable day...

  TacklesInterceptionsClearancesDuels WonutePlayed
Danny Rose 7 2 4 10 90
Erik Lamela 3 0 0 4 26
Harry Kane 2 0 0 8 90
Nabil Bentaleb 1 3 3 2 90
Ryan Mason 1 2 3 6 64
Kyle Walker 1 3 3 1 90
Eric Dier 0 0 4 3 90
Jan Vertonghen 0 3 4 5 90

And, as Opta stats show, for all of Rose's faults at Old Trafford, Spurs fans certainly have a case to defend him.

The 24-year-old was a different player after half-time and won seven tackles overall - more than double any other Tottenham player against Manchester United. Rose also won two interceptions, made four clearances and won 10 duels.

Rose still has plenty of flaws to his game, while Mauricio Pochettino's suggestion that he is the best left-back in England backfired on Sunday afternoon. But many Spurs supporters were still keen to back their defender, blaming others for their 3-0 loss - individuals or the team as a collective...

We look like we lack leadership and experience your exactly right. Vertoghen was captain at ajax but to me shows little or no leadership skills at all. we were on a 15+ game winning streak with vertoghen and fazio wheres that gone now?'

BUT have you ever seen a worse performance at right back as the one given by Walker today and that is from someone who on occasions springs to his defence. It says something when I was actually wishing we could sub him with Naughton, if he was still our player.'

And so were the substitutions and the coaching. The midfield was week, lost all the balls, the defence was week, Harry Kane was not good either. It was boys against men. Until Poch brings in some older. experienced players to balance the team, this team is going nowhere. And it was never the Spurs way to chase the ball for 90 minutes.'
