A weekend report from the Daily Mail claimed the England international was being closely monitored by both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, as he allegedly put talks regarding a new contract on hold until the end of the season.
Sterling’s current deal expires in the summer of 2017, but such has been his progress that Liverpool will surely want to tie him down for far longer than that.
So what of the rumours linking him with both the Bundesliga champions and the reigning Champions League holders?
Well Fjortoft for one, who is an expert on German football, is not convinced.
Writing on his official Twitter account on Monday morning, the former striker said, “In all due respect to Raheem Sterling, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are not after him.
“Agents come up with some funny stories, don’t they?”
Fjortoft has been on the ball in the past with a number of transfer stories, so there is no reason to doubt his latest comments.
Of course we do not know for certain and perhaps we never will, but the simple fact is Liverpool will want to keep one of their star players for as long as possible, while he will be fully aware of his increasing value.
