Martin Keown and Phill Neville were damning in their assessment of Everton's season so far on BBC programme Match of the Day 2 last night.
Everton may have beaten Newcastle 3-0 on the day, but it did not spare them from facing the wrath of the two BBC pundits.
Keown and Neville were both scathing in their analysis and stated that Roberto Martinez deserves criticism for falling to get to grips with Everton's season earlier.
"Last season they were magnificent, but it's crazy Everton are in this situation," Keown said. "They shouldn't be there, a club of this size. But they are having to make these baby-steps to get out of a difficult situation. He should have cracked it much sooner than he has."
"I think with the players and the quality that they have got at the football club they shouldn't be where they are in the league," Neville agreed.
Everton are currently in 14th place and their six-point cushion over 18th-placed Burnley is not enough to leave them feeling comfortable.
The Toffees should easily have enough quality to avoid the drop, but even after beating Newcastle they will have to pick up some more wins before their safety is confirmed.
It has been a hugely disappointing season for the Merseyside club, as it promised so much before it started.
Everton had a very productive transfer window and kept together much of the squad which made them such a success last year, but they have failed to maintain their standards and Martinez is now under pressure.
He should see this season out, but a similarly poor performance next term will surely make his position untenable.
