Former Nottingham Forest and Leeds United midfielder David Prutton has told Sky Sports’ FL 72 Review that he expects Bournemouth and Middlesbrough to finish in the top two of the Championship this season.
Bournemouth are currently at the top of the Championship table with 69 points from 37 matches, level on points with Watford but ahead on goal difference.
Middlesbrough are also on 69 points, but they are third as their goal difference is inferior to both Bournemouth and Watford.
“You look at the way Bournemouth are (playing) and the amount of goals they are scoring, you want to see them up there and charging for the top two,” the 33-year-old told Sky Sports’ FL 72 Review show on Monday.
“And Middlesbrough… Again the way they are playing and (Patrick) Bamford in such a great vein of goalscoring form, and the way they are going about and trying to go and play their way out of the Championship.
“As of this morning, I am going for Bournemouth and Middlesbrough, but that’s obviously subject to change.”
Could David Prutton’s prediction come true?
It is very tough to predict which two teams will get the automatic promotion spots, but Middlesbrough do look like a good bet.
Although Aitor Karanka’s side have struggled for consistency in recent weeks, they are a strong team who have some quality players.
Boro have been around the top two for most of the season, and one suspects that they will finish at least second in the Championship this season.
Many neutral football fans will agree with Prutton about Bournemouth. The Cherries do not have many big-name players, but manager Eddie Howe has done a remarkable job in making them one of the top contenders for the top two.
The likes of Derby County and Norwich City are very much in the running for a top-two finish, and many football followers will back the Rams for automatic promotion.
