While Celtic and their fans had all eyes on Sunday’s Scottish League Cup final against Dundee United, one transfer rumour could not be ignored, with the Sunday People linking the Bhoys with a surprise loan move for Steven Gerrard.
The Liverpool captain is leaving Anfield at the end of the current campaign, before joining up with LA Galaxy for a stint in the USA. But with the MLS season running from March to December, the report claimed Celtic were keen to bring the midfielder to the club during Gerrard’s off-season.
In much the same was as Manchester City signed Frank Lampard, at least initially, Gerrard was being tipped to pull on the famous Celtic shirt having donned the Liverpool strip for 679 competitive matches and counting.
While the rumour caught many by surprise, it actually makes sense on a lot of levels, not least the fact that Gerrard will not want to play for another English club but could be tempted by the promise of Champions League football at another British side.
