Sunderland have been dragged right into the relegation dogfight after an embarrassing defeat at home to Aston Villa this afternoon - piling the pressure on manager Gus Poyet.
The game was effectively over at half time after Villa smashed four goals in the opening 45 minutes, handing Tim Sherwood his third successive win in all competitions.
Striker Christian Benteke marked his return from injury with the opening goal on 16 minutes, and just moments later Gabriel Agbonlahor made it two.
By 37 minutes, the game was over as Agbonlahor struck his second of the game, and Benteke hit the fourth goal of the game on the stroke of half time.
Sunderland fans left for the exits in droves after the fourth goal, with some even throwing season tickets at manager Poyet, according to fans at the stadium.
The result leaves Sunderland just four points from the relegation zone, whilst Villa are edging towards safety under Sherwood, and have leapfrogged Sunderland with today's win.
