Mark Lawrenson has predicted in his BBC Sport column that Everton will win against Newcastle United at Goodison Park on Sunday.
The former Liverpool defender has backed the Toffees to register a 2-1 win and move further clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
Everton are currently 14th in the league table with 28 points from as many matches, just three points above the bottom three but with a game in hand.
“Everton are on a poor run in the Premier League, particularly at home where they have not won since they beat QPR on 15 December,” Lawrenson wrote on BBC Sport.
“Newcastle, meanwhile, have been so-so since John Carver took over and they are just drifting towards the end of the season.
“So I can see this being the win that Everton need to allay their relegation fears. It has to be. I don't think they are in danger of going down anyway, but three points would steady the nerves a little bit.”
Could Mark Lawrenson’s prediction come true?
Playing at home will give Everton an advantage, and Roberto Martinez’s side also have the better team.
However, given the way things have gone for the Merseyside outfit so far this season, one should not expect the Toffees to just turn up and pick up the three points against Newcastle.
Moreover, John Carver’s side are under pressure to perform, and they will be looking to make a statement at the Goodison.
The first goal in this encounter will be key. If Newcastle score first, then it will make the Everton players more nervous, and that could make them make more mistakes.
