One of Celtic's key players this season deserves to hold the Scottish League Cup aloft this weekend.
Celtic have a number of players to thank for their march towards a potential treble this season, but arguably the one who deserves cup success more than any other is midfielder Nir Biton.
The 23-year-old defensive midfielder has been impressive all season, building on his early progress in the previous campaign to now become an integral part of this Celtic side.
Some players fade away when it comes to the business-end of a campaign, but Biton has been getting better and better, with his performance against Inter Milan in the Europa League a stand-out moment.
Coming on leaps and bounds from his first season at the club, Biton now rightly deserves to hold some silverware aloft, with Sunday’s Scottish League Cup against Dundee United his chance to do just that.
As he revealed in a recent interview with the Herald, he is yet to enjoy knock-out cup success.
“I have never played in a cup final,” the Celtic star said, “just two semi-finals in Israel.”
That will change this weekend, and after a campaign where he has shown just what he is capable of, few would resent him the victory should it come…except of course United fans and supporters of Celtic’s other fierce rivals.
Defensive midfielders do not always get the credit they deserve, but Biton is a wonderful young talent, and what better way to end his real breakthrough campaign than with a trophy or three?
